The first factor that goes into flooring is the type of floor needed. What first comes to mind is hardwood flooring, which is what we see in most homes. It's one of the oldest types of flooring and has been used for centuries because of its ability to be refinished time after time. The most common form of hardwood flooring is strip flooring, which involves long, thin boards that are laid next to each other. However, there are other forms of hardwood flooring that include plank flooring, parquet flooring, and more decorative options. Visit our hardwood flooring page to learn more about each type of hardwood flooring. Popular types of wood used for solid hardwood flooring are maple, pin, oak, cherry, and walnut, but there are more. In fact, oak is the most common kind of wood used for wood floors, followed up by maple. These two are solid choices across the board for general purposes. Choosing the right wood type for you depends on what kind of look you are going for. The installation process for hardwood floors can require some experience. Although the wooden strips are grooved to ease installation, adhesive or floor nails are needed in order to fasten the wood to the subfloor. Additionally, a popular choice lately is laminate flooring, which is an artificial substitute to hardwood flooring. Its build quality is getting better and better, which is the reason why its more popular today. It resembles hardwood flooring and is easier to lay. If this is appealing, head over to our laminate flooring page. If you like the idea of laminate flooring but also want true hardwood floors, perhaps engineered hardwood flooring is the best alternative for you.

The second kind of flooring we do at Hempstead Flooring is vinyl flooring, with the most common type being vinyl planks. Vinyl is great because is mimics the desirable look of wood, but is more affordable and very durable. Vinyl flooring can even be waterproof, which makes it a great choice for a home which will have kids and toddlers running around. Vinyl flooring can be installed a couple different ways – there are click together vinyl and the adhesive loose lay vinyl. Both are super easy to install and both have their strong points. Laminate flooring is similar to vinyl flooring, but there are some differences, with the most prominent being how they are made, different uses they have, and the feel of the material. Laminate will generally be harder and make more noise when stepped on. Visit the vinyl/laminate page for more information.

The next common type of flooring we install is tile flooring. It’s great because it provides a really customizable look while also being super durable and water resistant. The durability of tile comes from the production process, in which the materials are bonded together at super high temperatures. Tiles are also resistant to stains, making them simply a great all-around floor type. Like wood flooring, there are many different types of tile that are commonly used, each with their own perks and benefits. These include ceramic tiles, porcelain tiles, quarry tiles, terracotta tiles, marble tiles, and more. Choosing the right kind of tile all depends on where the tile is going.  Visit our tiling page for more on choosing the right kind of tile.

A lesser known but equally great type of flooring is bamboo flooring. It’s known as an eco-friendly product and looks wonderful. Recent advances in the technology means that its durability is now up to par with traditional wood flooring such as oak. However, possibly the greatest aspect to bamboo flooring is the affordability. Since bamboo grows so easily, there’s always an abundance of it, meaning lower costs for you. That being said, you’ll still want to invest in quality bamboo so that it lasts as long as it can. Similarly to all other types of flooring, you can get bamboo flooring in a couple different ways. Horizontal bamboo flooring is the most common and classic look. There is also vertical bamboo flooring, in which the cut edge of the bamboo faces up. This gives vertical bamboo flooring a very even look. The third method of bamboo flooring is strand woven bamboo. The material for this is made from shredded and compressed bamboo, kind of like the process for creating plywood. This ultimately creates a very durable product, but it’s generally more expensive than other types of bamboo flooring.

The last flooring service we offer is concrete flooring services. First off, we offer concrete polishing. This involves a process of grinding and polishing existing concrete surfaces. The great thing about a concrete polishing is that no new materials must be purchased unlike other flooring options. The right skills can make traditional existing concrete into a sleek and stylish floor. Aside from concrete polishing, we also offer epoxy coating services. The epoxy used for this is highly durable, stylish, and very easy to clean, making it a wonderful choice for floors in areas that are used heavily like garages and warehouses. Visit our epoxy flooring website to learn more about how an epoxy coating can bring a new life to your garage, basement, or any other area.
Hempstead Flooring installs floors of all types, for all clients. However, many floors need to be maintained and occasionally refinished. This is common with hardwood floors, especially in high traffic areas that get a lot of use. Shoes, chairs, paws, and more can seriously wear on your floor, and it will eventually wear down your beautiful finish. This can take anywhere from a year to ten years or more, depending on how heavily the area is used. Luckily, Hempstead Flooring also specializes in hardwood floor refinishing! This is a process of sanding the floors down and then re-staining them to create a brand new shiny sheen. The sanders we use are professional grade with built in vacuums that clean up dust before it gets everywhere, so your house stays clean and allergy-free.

Most floor refinishing is requested from us because hardwood floors become damaged and lose their shine with use. However, another reason for refinishing floors is to change the color of the floor. Perhaps you got new cabinets in the kitchen or got some new furniture in the living room and would like to have the floor matching. Installing a new floor is costly and impractical, especially if the current hardwood is still relatively new. A better alternative to installing a whole new floor is actually refinishing your floor, in which we can easily change the color of your current floor while also giving it a beautiful and new shine!

Call us today! 516-412-6606

We offer installation of every type of flooring that you may need, but we also offer refinishing to all types of floors as well. We commonly see wood floor refinishing because it just looks so good, and wood floors are ideal for refinishing again and again. Using a combination of sanding, staining, and polyurethane, we’ll bring new life and rejuvenated looks to your worn-out hardwood floor. Aside from wood floor refinishing, we also offer tile floor touch-ups as well as epoxy refinishing. You’ve got a wonderful floor in your home, and treating it well with the proper refinishing can substantially increase the longevity and appeal.

The installation process for flooring varies with different types of floors. For hardwood floors, a powerful adhesive or nails are used to fasten the flooring to the subfloor. As far as vinyl and laminate go, these have a few installation options. Adhesive can be used for this type of floor, or they can even be laid down without any fastener. Tile flooring also varies in the installation process. Normally, cement will be used to seal the tiles to the floor, although there are other methods sometimes used. No matter what type of floor you choose for your space, the installation process will likely take a long time and lots of effort. If you have no experience with laying down floor, calling an expert such as Hempstead Flooring is a better alternative to doing it yourself.

Some common problems encountered when laying new floor are:
  • Misaligned walls: it can really be tricky trying to lay floor in a room that is 3 inches wider on one end than the other. For situations like this, the best course of action is to taper both sides of the floor rather than just one - this will allow for a less noticeable outcome.
  • Uneven subfloor: If the subfloor, which is what your flooring will be sitting on, is warped and uneven, then the final product will not come out well. If you encounter this, you may need to use self-leveling mortar or a similar material, or fix your subfloor if possible.
  • Uneven strips: this one, while annoying, isn't the end of the world. You just can't use that specific piece of wood, tile, laminate, or whatever else it could be.
Here are some tips and tricks we've learned over the years that save us lots of time
  • Installing an underlayment: although not always needed, an underlayment can add to a floor's lifespan by defending it against moisture coming from the subfloor. An underlayment is simply a layer of wood, foam, or paper that goes between the subfloor and the new flooring being laid.
  • Allow room for expansion: as much as it sucks, floors do generally expand. Maybe not tile floors, but hardwood and laminate flooring does. And when the strips are packed up tight against the wall and begin to expand, the final product will become warped and uneven.
  • Make sure your first row is absolutely straight: the first row of flooring strips is absolutely key to having an appealing final product. When this first row is crooked or uneven, the rest will be too! So make sure this one gets the most attention.

One huge factor that people overlook when seeking a new floor is the preparation. An experienced contractor will often spend more time preparing the blank floor than actually laying the new floor. This includes a process of pulling up any obstructions, sanding, and applying any materials that will help the new floor last longer. For more information on how to prepare a blank floor for a new finish, call us here. Flooring also takes time. Between preparation, laying down the floor, and sometimes letting it cure, it can be a week-long process. It’s good to keep this in mind when setting out to install a new floor, so make sure you have a plan for when your floor is being installed.
